In 2005, 12 officers with the U.S. Capitol Police were assaulted. Seven officers sustained injuries in the attacks.

Type of Activity

Officers with the U.S. Capitol Police were performing the following activities at the time of their attacks:

  • 6 officers were attempting arrests or serving summonses.
  • 4 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 2 officers were involved in investigations or searches.


  • 8 of the 12 officers were assaulted with personal weapons such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 1 officer was attacked with a vehicle.
  • 3 officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons.

Disposition Information

Law enforcement authorities arrested 12 suspects for assaulting U.S. Capitol Police officers; all the suspects had the charges against them dropped or were found not guilty.
