Michael J. Folmar Named Assistant Director of the FBI’s Security Division
FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III has named Michael J. Folmar assistant director of the FBI’s Security Division. Mr. Folmar most recently served as deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Training Division.
“The FBI’s Security Division is charged with ensuring the integrity and reliability of the FBI workforce, preserving a safe and secure work environment for FBI employees, and preventing the compromise of sensitive information,” said Director Mueller. “A 23-year veteran of the FBI, Mike Folmar brings a wealth of experience and the leadership skills to head up that effort.”
Mr. Folmar entered on duty as a special agent with the FBI in December 1986. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Oklahoma City Division’s Stillwater Resident Agency, where he investigated a variety of criminal matters. In May 1992, Mr. Folmar was transferred to the Newark Division, where he was assigned to investigate organized crime.
Mr. Folmar was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Transfer Unit at FBI Headquarters in November 1996. In December 1998, he was designated supervisory special agent in the Memphis Division, responsible for managing the division’s Violent Crime Squad.
In April 2001, Mr. Folmar returned to FBI Headquarters as team leader in the Inspection Division, where he led teams conducting evaluations and audits of FBI Headquarters and field divisions. He was named assistant special agent in charge of the Memphis Division in January 2002. He served in that role until September 2004, when he was appointed special assistant to the executive assistant director for administration at FBI Headquarters.
Mr. Folmar was named special agent in charge (SAC) of the Jacksonville Division in December 2005. After more than two years as SAC, he was named deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Training Division in Quantico, Virginia in January 2008.
Born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania and raised in Pittsburgh, Mr. Folmar graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pennsylvania in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in criminology. He later attained a Master of Science degree in administration of criminal justice from Troy University in Troy, Alabama. Prior to his employment with the FBI, Mr. Folmar was a criminal investigator in the United States Army assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia.
