Ms. Ballew: He’s the first to be charged with hacking into Voice over IP networks and reselling those services for a profit.
Ms. Beck: “Because he was hacking, he didn’t have to pay a dime for the access, but people were paying him for the hacked routes.”
Ms. Ballew: Suzanne Beck, special agent from FBI Newark. The subject sold more than 10 million minutes, making more than $1.4 million in less than a year. Several victims…
Ms. Beck: “Small-time mom and pop shops that were buying and selling VoIP traffic, to big telecommunication companies.”
Ms.Ballew: Even companies not providing Internet phone service.
Ms. Beck: “The companies were being billed for the traffic that they were routing through their systems, although they weren’t the ones routing the traffic.”
Ms. Ballew: The Venezuelan citizen was arrested in 2006.
Ms. Beck: “Although he had told us at the arrest everything he had done, he decided to flee the country.”
Ms. Ballew: In 2009, he was brought back to the U.S. from Mexico. He now faces 10 years in prison, three years’ supervised release, over $1 million in restitution, and deportation. I’m Denise Ballew of the Bureau, and that’s the FBI’s Closed Case of the Week.
