Overall, the number of males arrested in the United States in 2009 decreased 3.2 percent when compared with the number of those arrested in 2008. However, the number of females arrested increased 0.2 percent.
A comparison of arrest data for juveniles (persons under age 18) for 2008 and 2009 showed arrests of male juveniles decreased 9.5 percent, and arrests of female juveniles decreased 7.5 percent.
The number of males arrested for violent crime in 2009 decreased 2.7 percent; the number of females arrested declined 0.4 percent in the 2-year trend.
Arrests of male juveniles for violent crimes in 2009 dropped 11.5 percent from data for the previous year. The number of female juveniles arrested for violent crimes declined 6.1 percent.
Both genders showed decreases in the number of persons arrested for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter in 2009 when compared with data for 2008. Overall, arrests of males for this offense decreased 4.8 percent, and arrests of females declined 4.4 percent. Arrests of juveniles for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter declined for both male juveniles, down 9.6 percent, and female juveniles, down 1.6 percent.
The number of males arrested in 2009 for property crimes decreased 2.2 percent, but the number of females arrested increased 8.6 percent when compared with data for 2008.
The number of juvenile males arrested for property crime decreased 7.3 percent, and the number of juvenile females arrested for property crime decreased 0.2 percent.
