In 2008, the average dollar value per motor vehicle stolen in the United States was $6,751. The average dollar value of property taken during burglaries was $2,079; during robberies, $1,315; and during larceny-thefts, $925.
By location, most robberies (43.1 percent) happened on streets or highways and the majority of burglaries (70.3 percent) occurred at residences.
Among the larceny-theft categories, larceny-thefts from buildings had the highest average dollar value of property taken, $1,540.
Forty-five percent of all larceny-thefts involved property valued at more than $200.
