The estimated number of violent crimes in 2008 was 1,382,012 offenses, a decrease of 1.9 percent over the 2007 estimate, but an increase of 1.6 percent from 2004.
All violent crimes decreased in 2008 compared to the 2007 estimates. Murder decreased by 3.9 percent; aggravated assault decreased 2.5 percent; forcible rape decreased 1.6 percent; and robbery decreased 0.7 percent.
Based on the estimated number of offenses in 2008, the rate for violent crime was 454.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease of 2.7 percent when compared with 2007 data.
The 2008 murder rate, 5.4 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants, was a 4.7 percent decrease when compared with the rate for 2007.
Estimated at nearly 9.8 million (9,767,915) offenses, property crime decreased 0.8 percent in 2008 when compared to the 2007 estimate.
By property crime type, the estimated number of motor vehicle thefts decreased 12.7 percent, while the two remaining property crime offenses (burglary and larceny-theft) increased 2.0 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.
The property crime rate for 2008 (3,212.5 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants) was down 1.6 percent from the 2007 rate.
