Mr. Schiff: October is Cyber Awareness Month, and working for you 24/7 so you are not defrauded in cyberspace is the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, known as IC3.
Ms. Hoppey: “We’re very unique because we’re an alliance with the National White Collar Crime Center, which is an organization, a non-profit organization, funded by the Department of Justice.”
Mr. Schiff: That’s the chief of the IC3, FBI Special Agent Leslie Hoppey.
Ms. Hoppey: “And what our mission is, is that we address fraud committed over the Internet.”
Mr. Schiff: Hoppey says IC3 being busy is an understatement.
Ms. Hoppey: “We’re averaging over 28,000 complaints per month.”
Mr. Schiff: Hoppey says there are ways to be safer in cyberspace.
Ms. Hoppey: “Keep your personal computer updated with the latest anti-virus and firewall software and maintain the operating system updates.”
Mr. Schiff: If you are a victim of computer fraud, go to IC3.gov and report it right away. I’m Neal Schiff of the Bureau, and that’s what’s happening at the “FBI, This Week.”
