FBI HOLDS KICK-OFF FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

In an effort to further create and sustain a professional team of trained and certified project managers, the FBI’s Office of Information Program sponsored a kick-off Tuesday, April 4, of the Project Management Institute.

The kick-off signaled the first Project Management Institute (PMI) community within the FBI. Participation in the community is expected to strengthen project management practices and principles with IT professionals within the Bureau.

Zalmai Azmi, FBI Chief Information Officer, told the audience of more than 50 attendees the importance of consistently managing FBI projects under the PMI standards and methodology.

PMI is a recognized leader in project management and is actively engaged in setting professional standards, conducting research and providing access to a wealth of information and resources. Individuals holding a PMI Project Management Professionals (PMP) credentials are widely recognized throughout the IT community as the best in their filed, representing a wide range of knowledge, experience, and understanding in all facets of project management.

In 2005, 110 FBI employees completed project management training with 53 employees achieving the distinguished Project Management Professional (PMP) credentials. According to Azmi, the PMP “gold standard” of project management certification is widely recognized throughout the IT community to identify project managers as being among the best in their field.

PMI has over 200 chapters worldwide that provide members with access to project management practices in similar interest groups. The FBI community is a component of the PMI Washington, D.C. Chapter. Attending the kick-off was Andrew Anderson, president of the PMI Washington, D.C. Chapter.

The FBI’s PMI community will help to ensure the continued return in the FBI’s investment in the development of professionally trained project managers. The activities of the PMI FBI community will also provide a convenient way for employees to receive and maintain PMI credentials.
