FBI Captures Ten Most Wanted Fugitive In South Carolina; Arrest Made Before The Formal Public Announcement Placing Aurlieas Dame McClarty On The List

LYNNE A. HUNT, SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE (SAC), FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION, BALTIMORE DIVISION ANNOUNCED TODAY THAT AURLIEAS DAME MCCLARTY, AGE 22, WAS ARRESTED AT 5:45PM ON FEBRUARY 14, 2001, AT A RESIDENCE IN IRMO, SOUTH CAROLINA. MCCLARTY WAS ARRESTED BY FBI AGENTS FROM THE COLUMBIA DIVISION OF THE FBI ACCOMPANIED BY MEMBERS OF THE U.S. MARSHAL'S FUGITIVE TASK FORCE AND IRMO, SOUTH CAROLINA, POLICE.

MCCLARTY HAD RECENTLY BEEN ADDED TO THE FBI'S TEN MOST WANTED LIST ON FEBRUARY 5, 2000. THE FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENT PLACING HIM ON THE LIST HAD NOT YET BEEN MADE WHEN INVESTIGATIVE EFFORTS DETERMINED THAT MCCLARTY WAS RESIDING IN IRMO, SOUTH CAROLINA.

MCCLARTY, WHO WAS KNOWN BY NUMEROUS ALIASES, WAS WANTED ON FEDERAL BANK ROBBERY CHARGES FOR THE ROBBERY OF THE CITIZENS NATIONAL BANK, WASHINGTON BOULEVARD, LAUREL, MARYLAND, ON OCTOBER 4, 2000. IN ADDITION, MCCLARTY WAS WANTED ON LOCAL CHARGES IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA FOR THE DOUBLE HOMICIDE OF TWO EMPLOYEES OF A TRUCK RENTAL DEALERSHIP. THOSE MURDERS OCCURRED ON JULY 18, 2000 AND WERE ALLEGEDLY COMMITTED DURING THE COURSE OF AN ARMED ROBBERY WHICH NETTED ONLY $200. BOTH VICTIMS WERE SHOT IN THE HEAD. MCCLARTY WAS ALSO WANTED BY INDIANA STATE AUTHORITIES FOR CRIMINAL DECEPTION AND BY THE UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE, IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA, FOR COUNTERFEITING.

MCCLARTY WAS ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT AT A RESIDENCE IN IRMO FOLLOWING AN EXTENSIVE FUGITIVE INVESTIGATION BY FEDERAL AND STATE AUTHORITIES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. MCCLARTY WAS THE 461ST PERSON TO BE PLACED ON THE FBI'S "TEN MOST WANTED" FUGITIVE LIST, WHICH BEGAN IN 1950. SINCE THEN, 432 FUGITIVES HAVE BEEN APPREHENDED OR LOCATED, 137 OF THEM AS THE RESULT OF CITIZEN COOPERATION. MCCLARTY IS THE 18TH TOP TEN FUGITIVE WHO COMMITTED A CRIME IN MARYLAND. SAC HUNT STATED THAT SHE JOINS OTHERS IN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY WHO ARE GREATLY RELIEVED THAT ANOTHER DANGEROUS THREAT TO OUR CITIZENS HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE STREETS WITHOUT FURTHER VIOLENCE.

MCCLARTY WILL APPEAR BEFORE THE UNITED STATES MAGISTRATE JUDGE IN COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON FEBRUARY 15, 2001 FOR A REMOVAL HEARING.
