Lisa Monaco – Chief of Staff

Ms. Monaco is the Chief of Staff to the Director of the FBI. As Chief of Staff, Ms. Monaco manages the day-to-day operations of the Director’s Office, ensures it is addressing priorities in a coordinated fashion, and advises the Director on national security and law enforcement issues. She previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to the Director where she advised him on a wide range of legal and policy matters in the national security and criminal arenas.

A former federal prosecutor and experienced Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA), Ms. Monaco served as a prosecutor on the Enron Task Force charged with investigating criminal violations in connection with the collapse of the Enron Corporation in 2001. She was co-lead trial counsel in the prosecution of five former executives of Enron Broadband Services, a business unit of Enron and received the Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service, the Department of Justice’s highest award, for her work as a prosecutor the Enron Task Force.

As an AUSA for the District of Columbia she prosecuted a range of cases from violent crimes to fraud and public corruption matters. She has tried numerous jury trials and argued appellate cases before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and D.C. Circuit. She received a Special Achievement Award every year during her tenure as an AUSA from 2001-2007.

From September 1998 to January 2001, Ms. Monaco served as Counsel to Attorney General Janet Reno, providing advice and guidance on national security, criminal enforcement, budget, and oversight issues.

From 1997 to 1998, Ms. Monaco was a Law Clerk to the Honorable Jane R. Roth, United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Ms. Monaco earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990 from Harvard University where she was awarded Magna Cum Laude honors in her field, American History and Literature. She earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1997 from the University of Chicago Law School where she was Editor-in-Chief of The University of Chicago Law School Roundtable.
