Leave Information

Department of Justice (DOJ) has granted an extension to FBI's authority to grant Administrative Leave to personnel who have been displaced by the consequences of Hurricane Katrina.  Our authority now runs through October 1, 2005. 

The head of each impacted FBI office is authorized to grant Administrative Leave to employees who are prevented from reporting for work as well as those who are faced with a personal emergency (e.g., need to register children in new school district; need to meet with insurance adjuster; need to find new temporary housing; etc.) due to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, provided those individuals can be spared from their usual responsibilities. 

Once an office is up and running and the employee is needed there, the head of office can inform employees that the blanket grant of administrative leave has ended, and they can direct employees to report to work.  The head of office may also continue to grant intermittent or continuous administrative leave to any impacted employee if the employees' services can be spared and the employee needs to deal with consequences related to the aftermath of Katrina.

DOJ will reevaluate the need to grant another extension of the authority to grant Administrative Leave before it expires on 1 October.  To make this evaluation, DOJ has established a reporting requirement.  By NLT 23 September we must report all Administrative Leave usage by all impacted employees. 

We expect additional information of the use of an emergency leave transfer program as well as the use of safe haven for employees and their families, and we will get that information to you as soon as decisions are made and implementation guidelines are clear.
